Ahead of its release in some international countries – including India – this weekend, the embargo on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom reviews was lifted late Tuesday. The sequel to 2015’s blockbuster reboot, Jurassic World, debuted with a mediocre (but ‘fresh’) 63% score on the review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes, based on 40 reviews.
The critics’ consensus reads, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom adds another set piece-packed entry to the blockbuster franchise, although genuinely thrilling moments are in increasingly short supply.”
By comparison, Jurassic World scored 71%, much higher than franchise low Jurassic Park III (50%). Steven Spielberg’s original film is still the highest rated of the series, with a 92% score. Spielberg’s direct sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park scored 53%.
According to the critics, Fallen Kingdom offers several show-stopping action set-pieces but little originality. “These movies will go on and on, but some of us are still waiting for them to evolve,” wrote Los Angeles Times’ Justin Chang. “It all just hangs there like so much else in this movie, undeveloped concepts that could one day be turned into a genuinely exciting, surprising film. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is, sadly, not it,” Village Voice’s Bilge Ebiri wrote.
Conversely, Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair wrote that the film is an improvement over its predecessor and “at least Fallen Kingdom considers the idea of letting go, making it a more thoughtful and interesting film than its immediate predecessor.”
Owen Gleiberman, writing for Variety, agreed. “The first Jurassic World was, quite simply, not a good ride. Fallen Kingdom is an improvement, but it’s the first Jurassic film to come close to pretending it isn’t a ride at all, and as a result it ends up being just a passable ride,” he wrote.
Fallen Kingdom is directed by JA Bayona and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeff Goldblum. The film will release in over 2,000 Indian screens on Thursday.
