Why Gandhi was not awarded the Nobel Prize. I think it is a billion dollar question. Here we should discuss all about it.

Mahatma Gandhi, considered as Father of Indian Nation. Because, Under his leadership India achieved independence from British rule.

Since he considered as the symbol of nonviolence. So that whole world is now celebrating his birthday. As international non-violence day on October 2nd every year.

But up to the date, Gandhiji did not awarded the Nobel Prize.

Even though, Gandhi nominated 5 times for the Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, Nobel Prize committee did not consider him.

Gandhi first nominated for Nobel Prize in 1937

A Norway Parliament member, nominated Gandhi in 1937 for Nobel Prize. Further, Gandhi was in the short list of 13.But the Nobel Prize committee attributed that Gandhi was too much of an Indian Nationalist. And not working for the welfare of the world.

As a result of this, They dropped him from the list. And the nomination process of Gandhi for Nobel Prize took place again in 1938 and 1939.But,even they could not short listed him this time. Due to various reasons.

Rejected again Nobel Prize to Gandhi in 1948

Further, Gandhi nominated for Nobel Prize in 1947.However, he was again in the short list for the prize.

For this time, the Nobel Prize committee explained the reason. That he achieved the independence for India. Along with partition of India and Pakistan.

More over, in 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was in nomination list for Nobel Prize. But unfortunately, he was assassinated on 30 January 1948.

Even though, he was one of the short list member of final 3 for Nobel Prize. But nobody awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1948.

According to Nobel Prize committee there was no suitable living candidate. For the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948.

And they expressed that Gandhi had left no suitable heirs or organizations. To accept the prize money as well as award.

How ever, the Nobel Committee itself expressed regret in 2006.That Nobel Prize had never been awarded to Gandhi .

  • According to some experts, the Nobel Prize awarded mostly to European and America. Up to the year 1960.
  • And honoring Nobel Prize to Gandhi would anger the British. Because Gandhi worked against their colonialism.

What is the Greatest award to Gandhiji

In fact, we need not worry about the honor of Nobel Prize or Bharata Ratna to Gandhiji.
Because today Mahatma Gandhi and his Philosophy achieved credibility. That is more far away from any award.
