The Android One-backed Mi A2 is now available for buying in India through open sale, and Xiaomi will be launching the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage version of the phone soon. The confirmation comes via the company’s social media channels where Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain also stressed that they “have been increasing our manufacturing capacity so that Mi Fans can buy their favourite products at any time.” Xiaomi only recently started selling the Redmi Note 5 Pro through open sale, and starting today even the Poco F1 6GB RAM and 128GB storage version can be purchased through the same model.
The Mi A2 4GB RAM and 64GB storage version is available for Rs 16,999 and is exclusively available from Amazon India and Xiaomi’s Mi.com/in. Both the online channels will now offer this version of the Mi A2 through open sale.
The main USP of the Mi A2 is the fact that it runs a stock version of Android and not Xiaomi’s custom ROM MIUI. It is part of Google’s Android One program and comes with the promise of frequent and timely software updates, faster than other Xiaomi phones that run MIUI. The Mi A2 is successor to last year’s Mi A1 which was also an Android One phone.
This year Xiaomi has made changes to the platform to incorporate modern design and modern hardware in its new Android One phone. The phone has a full-metal body and a 5.99-inch ‘full-screen’ FHD+ IPS LCD display with a 2160x1080p and an unusual aspect ratio of 18:9. The phone measures 7.3mm in thickness and is protected up-top by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Mi A2 is available in as many as four colours in India, gold, blue, black and rose gold.
In terms of core hardware, the Mi A2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor. The Mi A2 does not support expandable storage and also it does not ship with a headphone jack which means the same USB Type-C port at the bottom will have to be used for charging, data syncing and audio out.
The Mi A2 is a dual-SIM phone that supports 4G LTE connectivity. It runs a stock version of Android 8.1 Oreo with a few custom Xiaomi apps like the Mi Remote that makes use of the phone’s IR blaster. The Mi A2 is further backed by a 3,000mAh battery and supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 technology.
